Man City vs Real Madrid Ends 3-3 on aggregate; Bayern Munich Advances

Controversial ending as Man City bows out of the Champions League

Missed penalty costs Man City a place in the semi-finals

Manchester City's hopes of a quadruple were dashed on Wednesday night as they were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in a dramatic quarter-final second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite winning the first leg 2-1 in Madrid, Pep Guardiola's side were unable to hold on to their advantage and eventually lost 3-3 on aggregate.

City took the lead in the second half through Gabriel Jesus, but Real Madrid hit back with three goals in quick succession from Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and Toni Kroos.

City were awarded a penalty in the dying minutes, but Raheem Sterling's effort was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

The result means that Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the semi-finals, while City will now have to focus on winning the Premier League and FA Cup.

Reaction

"It's a tough one to take," said Guardiola. "We played well and created chances, but we couldn't take them.

"Real Madrid are a great team and they showed their quality tonight. We have to learn from this and come back stronger next season."

"We're very happy to have reached the semi-finals," said Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane. "It was a tough game, but we showed great character and determination.

"We know that Bayern Munich will be a difficult opponent, but we're confident that we can beat them."
