Is Tropical Storm Debby Florida's Next Ian?

Fort Myers and Cape Coral residents brace for potential flooding

Residents in Fort Myers and Cape Coral are bracing for potential flooding as Tropical Storm Debby makes its way across Florida. Debby made landfall on Florida's Big Bend at 7 am ET as a Category 1 hurricane with 80 mph winds, and is now weakening as it moves inland. However, the storm is still expected to bring heavy rain and flooding to the area. Cape Coral is particularly vulnerable to flooding, even with the standard afternoon thunderstorm.

The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and all of Lee County. Residents are urged to take precautions and be prepared for flooding. Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 24 counties in Florida, including Lee County.

In anticipation of the storm, Lee County has opened several shelters. Residents are encouraged to evacuate if they live in low-lying areas or are otherwise at risk of flooding. The county has also suspended all public transportation services.

Cape Coral residents are no strangers to flooding. The city was hit hard by Hurricane Ian in September 2022, and many residents are still recovering from the damage. The city has been working to improve its drainage system since Ian, but it is unclear how well it will hold up to Debby.

"We're taking every precaution we can," said Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter. "But we know that flooding is a real possibility. We're urging residents to be prepared and to take the necessary steps to stay safe."
