Frech notches comeback win over Krueger in Guadalajara second round

Dramatic three-set victory sets up quarterfinal clash with top seed Stephens

Having ousted third seed Alison Riske in the opening round, Jule Niemeier's impressive start to the Guadalajara Open continued on Wednesday as she overcame Daria Kasatkina to reach the quarterfinals.

The German, currently ranked 151st in the world, claimed a battling 6-2 2-6 6-4 win over the Russian world number eight in two hours and 31 minutes.

Niemeier's reward is a last-eight meeting with top seed Sloane Stephens, who eased past Marie Bouzkova 6-3 6-3.

There were no such problems for second seed Paula Badosa, who cruised past qualifiers Xiyu Wang and Donna Vekic in straight sets.

The Spaniard's reward is a quarterfinal clash with seventh seed Madison Keys, who rallied past fellow American Jessica Pegula 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Fourth seed Coco Gauff faces fifth seed Caroline Garcia in the other half of the draw.

In other second-round action, Kristina Mladenovic produced a superb performance to defeat top seed Madison Keys 6-3 6-2 on Tuesday.

The Frenchwoman, who is ranked 121st in the world, broke Keys' serve five times and saved all five break points she faced to claim victory in one hour and 23 minutes.

Mladenovic will face eighth seed Daria Kasatkina in the second round.

There were also wins for sixth seed Belinda Bencic, who overcame qualifier Nao Hibino 6-0 6-2, and seventh seed Marie Bouzkova, who defeated Tereza Martincova 6-4 6-1.
