John Kelly tells NYT Trump said: "Hitler did some good things"
John Kelly, former chief of staff in the Trump White House, has told the New York Times that Donald Trump once said: "Hitler did some good things".
Kelly made the claim in an interview for a new book by Michael Bender, "Frankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost".
According to Kelly, Trump made the remark during a 2018 trip to Paris to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Kelly said Trump was "fixated" on the size of the crowd at the event, and that he kept comparing it to the crowds at his own inauguration.
He said Trump then turned to him and said: "Well, Hitler did some good things."
Kelly said he was "stunned" by the remark.
He said he did not challenge Trump at the time, but that he later told him that he should not say such things.
Trump has denied making the remark.
In a statement, he said: "I never said that. It's a lie. It's a total lie."
The White House has also denied the claim.
In a statement, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "This is a false and outlandish claim. It is a complete fabrication and is vehemently denied."
The claim is the latest in a series of allegations that Trump has made positive comments about Hitler.
In 2016, he said that Hitler was a "strong leader" who "did many good things."
He has also said that he admires Hitler's "nationalism."
These comments have been widely condemned by historians and anti-Semitism groups.
In a statement, the Anti-Defamation League said: "It is deeply disturbing that President Trump would reportedly make such a comment."
"Hitler was one of the most evil figures in history, and it is unconscionable to suggest that he did anything good."
"We urge President Trump to unequivocally condemn Hitler and his heinous crimes.
"The Holocaust was a genocide that killed six million Jews. It is not a subject for casual conversation."
