Quake Injures Several, Damages Buildings in Tokyo and Surrounding Areas

Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Strikes Noto Peninsula

A strong earthquake registering a magnitude 5.9 hit the Noto Peninsula area of Ishikawa Prefecture on Thursday, injuring several people and causing damage to buildings, according to Japan's Meteorological Agency.

The quake struck at around 9:42 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located off the coast of the Noto Peninsula. The quake was felt strongly in the prefectures of Ishikawa, Toyama, and Fukui, as well as in parts of Tokyo and surrounding areas.

In Tokyo, the quake caused buildings to shake and sway, and some people were injured by falling objects. Several buildings in the capital were also damaged, including the Tokyo Skytree, which was closed to visitors due to safety concerns.

The quake is the strongest to hit Japan since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 15,000 people.
